Obey
Obey is much more than just a clothing brand. The story of Obey begins in 1989, when street artist Shepard Fairey designed a sticker with the image of wrestler Andre the Giant. This sticker was the start of a worldwide street art campaign. The Obey campaign was born out of the Do It Yourself culture of punk rock and skateboarding. The clothing line, founded in 2001, was just another canvas for Shepard’s work. The message of Obey is about self-empowerment. By telling people to ‘obey’ in a sarcastic way, Obey wants you to take your life in your own hands and think about your surroundings. The clothing is inspired by classic military design and work wear basics, and the iconography of popular culture, commercial marketing and political messaging. Together with designers Mike Ternosky and Erin Wignall, Shepard creates designs that represent his influences, ideals and philosophy.
